The picturesque park area has some of the steepest hills and most rugged terrain in southeastern Michigan.

      Scenic hardwoods and hemlock provide the backdrop. Easy to moderately difficult 2.5 mile groomed cross-country ski trail. You may find yourself sharing the trail with white tailed deer along with other fur bearing mammals and wintering songbirds. Auxiliary trail loop of 3/4 of a mile in length adds hills and short slopes of medium difficulty for the skier. Parking lot on Bergland Road 1 mile north of Hwy 28 & 64.

      Michigan Audubon Society's first sanctuary and remains one of the largest. Established in 1941 primarily for the protection of Greater Sandhill Cranes and their nesting and migration-staging habitat, the refuge has made a significant contribution in restoring Michigan's crane population. In recent years, more than 5,000 Sandhill Cranes have been recorded at Baker Sanctuary on a single October day and as many as 13 pair of cranes have nested there in the spring. Access to certain areas of the Sanctuary is restricted. A resident manager coordinates crane viewing at the Kiwanis Youth Area, adjacent to the sanctuary, Saturday and Sunday each weekend in October from 4pm-7pm, and hosts Crane Fest the second full weekend in October each year. The sanctuary contains nearly 900 acres of varied habitat and more than 200 bird species have been recorded at Baker Sanctuary. In recent years, three prairie restoration projects and a wetland restoration have taken place on the meadow and marshland trail off 15 Mile Road. Several geo-caches have been established as well. Pets on leashes are permitted (meadow and marshland trail only) as is cross country skiing (in season). Nature study, bird watching, and wildflower viewing (in season) are encouraged from dawn to dusk daily on both trails. Removal of anything is prohibited. Open daily dawn to dusk *Free admission

      The Bete Grise Preserve, a Nature protected area, is a wetland area stretching along Lake Superior from Bete Grise to Point Isabelle along the Gay-Lac La Belle Road on the Keweenaw's south shore. The area features two miles of premier Lake Superior shoreline and contains roughly 1500 acres of diverse wetland types. There is a small undeveloped parking area on the north side of the Gay-Lac La Belle Road at the boundary between Sections 2 & 3 with a clearly defined trail that leads to the beach. Motorized vehicles, camping or overnight use, fires and removal or collection of any vegetation or nature feature (except berry picking for personal use) are prohibited. Pets on leash are welcome. Open year round to foot travel and other types of passive recreational use such as hiking, fishing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and the like. Hunting is allowed by written permit.
