Assateague Island National Seashore consists of beach, dunes, forest, marsh, and bay in a wet and wild setting. It is surrounded by the pounding surf of the Atlantic Ocean and shallow expanses of Chincoteague Bay. Wild horses and birds are among many kinds of island wildlife. Although oceanside activities are better known, many visitors enjoy camping, hiking, bicycling, and bayside recreation. Nearby communities support the national seashore with other kinds of lodging and services. Assateague's visitor centers are the best places to get maps for orientation and to talk to naturalists about wildlife and recreational opportunities. The complexity of the National Seashore is reflected by the three management agencies that function within its boundaries.
