Bringing up Baby:
Puppy Training Tips Made Easy
He’s cute . . . he’s cuddly . . . and he’s wee wee-ing all over the living room rug. Yes . . . it’s officially time to move on from that new baby feeling and on to the joys of training your pup. While things can be a slow go at first, here are few helpful hints that can get you and your new little someone on the fast track to success in no time flat . . .
Quality over Quantity
When it comes to training a young pet, many people get frustrated when their puppy begins to lose interest during a training session. While this may seem like a setback – these little losses of interest can simply be a sign of puppy is feeling over stimulated. Much like human babies, puppies have a limited attention span.
A puppy under two months should never be trained in longer than fifteen minute intervals at a time. When the fifteen minutes is up, get out and play or sit down for a nap together. If puppy shows signs of disinterest before the fifteen minutes ends simply give him a break and try again later.
Pup-Stops and Poop Scoops
One of the best tools for training your puppy to tinkle outdoors . . . and not in your sneakers . . . is a small crate. Make sure to steer clear of larger crates with too much room to roam. The whole idea behind a crate is that it gives puppy limited space to “potty”. Why? Because dogs instinctively hold their urine in attempts to keep their sleeping space healthy and clean.
Simply put puppy in the crate, with food and water of course, and take him outdoors in regular intervals. (Remember that puppies can go up to six times a day.) The idea is to keep your puppy inside the crate for a few days until you begin to see a pattern emerging. This will help you learn puppy’s own internal “wee wee” schedule and help puppy learn to hold his tinkle until taken outdoors.
Reward Good Behavior
Ever watched a parent go simply gaga when their baby ate a bite of those horribly icky smashed peas? They might sound a little nutty but they are actually putting nature’s best “training tool” into action. Rewarding good behavior is not only vital to being a good human mommy but it’s also invaluable in being a good pet mommy too.
When your puppy tinkles outdoors – go gaga. Give him lots and lots of praise. You’ll feel ridiculous at first but it’s important to be loud and clear when letting puppy know he’s pleased you. This “over-reaction” of happiness will help puppy relate going potty or coming when called to being adored by you . . . and this will ultimately lead to puppy trying to recreate those things that make you so incredibly happy.
When it comes to training your puppy, remember . . . there may be setbacks. And that’s perfectly ok. And of course, it will also take lots and lots of practice . . . and that’s ok too because practice makes perfect!
