North Carolina's newest emerald discovery! The Carolina Emerald Mine is located at the Vein Mountain Gold Camp south of Marion, and is the only native emerald mine open to the public in North Carolina. The material from the emerald vein is transported to the water flume in its natural and unsalted condition. Gem and mineral enthusiasts will appreciate that the ore on this property not only produces native gold, but also 40 different types of crystals and gems, including olivine, moonstone, garnets, aquamarine, tourmaline, several types of quartz, and many more. Gold prospectors will appreciate the 30 acre property with over 4100 feet of river frontage, and a chance to participate in an annual drawing for a large gold nugget. Prospectors can pan in a roofed area, use dredges, set up a high banker, or work from the roofed water flume or sluice. Primitive riverside camping sites are available, as well as sites with power and water. There is also a gift shop, fishing lakes, and handicap bathroom facilities.

This scenic waterfall, located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, is a 60-foot plunge down a wide and even rock face. At Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 339.5, turn into Crabtree Meadows Recreation Area. Waterfall is accessible year-round. If campground is closed, the hike to falls is an additional 0.3 miles. Moderate trail distance is 2.5 mile loop.
