Richard Wright was born on a plantation near Natchez, Mississippi, where he lived in poverty as the grandson of former slaves. His mother was a schoolteacher and his father left home when Richard was five. Wright became one of America’s greatest black writers and is listed among the first African-American writers to achieve literary fame and fortune through the superb quality of his work.
