Once called the "Athens of the West," New Harmony has been a favorite place to rejuvenate the spirit for nearly 200 years.
When the Harmonie Society, a religious communal group from Germany, settled the town in 1814, they quickly built a beautiful community which served as a manufacturing and commercial center.
After the Harmonists sold the town to Robert Owen in 1825, a group of leading scientists and educators came to New Harmony in hopes of creating a Utopian Society.
Throughout the mid 1800s New Harmony and its citizens were frequently visited by artists, explorers, and intellectuals from around the world. Yesterday and tomorrow are waiting for you in New Harmony, Indiana.
