This is where the mighty Mississippi begins. The world's thrid longest river starts its journey as a small stream beneath the majestic pine trees of Itasca State Park north of Park Rapids. The significance
and beauty of the headwaters area was recognized long ago, and was preserved as Parkland in 1891, making Itasca Minnesota's oldest State Park. This landmark park draws visitor from around the world. An excursion boat, bike trail, historic lodge, and stands of virgin pines are among the main attractions,
but the highlight is the chance to walk across the Mississippi River where it begins.
There is much to see and do outside the park as well. There are numerous fishing lakes in the area, with plenty of lakeside resorts and campgrounds. Park Rapids has small art and history museums and numerous craft shops in the nearby countryside.
Some area farms offer tours. Golfers will find a selection of courses, including the Headwaters Country Club, and Blueberry Pines Golf Club.
And nearby is the Crow Wing River, a scenic Canoe Route.
Heading east from Park Rapids is the Heartland Bike Trail, passing through the towns of Dorset, Nevis and Akeley.
The tiny town of Dorset boldly claims the to be the Restaurant Capitol of the world. The Country, gospel and bluegrass music take the stage at the Woodtick Musical Jamboree all summer in Akeley. North of Park Rapids is the new Forestedge Winery. And Nevis is home to a giant Tiger muskie, a statue boasting the area's great fishing.
Park Rapids, Minnesota is located on hwy 34 and 71. About 1/2 hour
east of Detroit Lakes and about 25 minutes south of Lake Itasca State Park.
Park Rapids has a beautiful park right in the middle of town. Featuring
a great fishing spot, swimming area, pinic grounds, pavillion area, playground,
tennis courts and more. What a great park, very well kept and rather large
for many activities.
HUBBARD COUNTY FAIR Hubbard County Fair, a county fair, with that good ole' small town atmosphere. I am a derby
fan, so I took in the show and watched them smash each other up. Here's
a few shots of the Demolition Derby. I even saw pick up trucks smash em'
up for the first time. That was a cool heat to watch! I'm hoping for Motorcycles next year! Now that would be something to see! LOL!
Well it was a great show, and a really nice town to take in the sights.
