Detroit Lakes Area Wildlife Refuges
The Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge - located 18 minutes northeast of Detroit Lakes, is a wildlife haven not to be missed. The forests and waters of Tamarac is home to over 250 species of birds, including Bald Eagles, trumpeter swans and ruffed grouse.
White Tailed Deer, porcupine, beaver and occasional black bear, moose or timber wolf. Start your visit at the interpertive center which is open weekdays year round including weekends during the summer months.
Other activities available include Hiking, auto touring, birding, fishing, hunting, wildlife observation and photography.
Hamden Slough - New refuge restoring prairie wetlands and grasses, offers spectacular views of spring and fall migrating birds. View dramatic displays by eagles going after waterfowl.
Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District - provides more than 40,000 acres of wetlands and prairie habitatfor birds, wildlife and plants.
The prairie Marsh Trail is being developed at the district's headquarters just north of Detroit Lakes on Tower Rd.
