    Historic Fort Snelling, Minnesota



     


    Fort Snelling

    Built on a commanding bluff above the Mississippi  and Minnesota Rivers, Fort Snelling was once the last United States outpost in the 
    "Northern Wilderness"
    and the hub of frontier commerce and administration on the upper Mississippi. 

    Now the restored fort opens it's gates to welcome you to 19th century frontier life. Talk with soldiers who grumble about farm chores. Meet a Dakota trader's wife. Visit the blacksmith at his forge, the carpenter in his shop, or the surgeon at the post Hospital. Servants, cooks, officers, laundress and the storekeeper are eager to share their stories with you.

    Take part in the Fort's everyday life. Shoulder a musket, mend clothes, scrape a hide or sing along with the soldiers' songs. Take tea with Mrs. Snelling or sample the soldiers' bread ration. Shop for supplies at the Sutler's store, where only the prices are modern. At Historic Fort Snelling, visitors are always welcome and the modern world is checked at the gate.

    Just minutes east of the Mall of America. Take the Fort Snelling Historic site exit on Minnesota Highways 5 or 55.

    Hours

    Memorial Day weekend thru Labor Day: Wednesday thru Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm

    Sundays noon to 5 pm

    During the months of May, September, and October, the fort is open Saturday 10-5 and Sunday noon-5
